The JK Bank member, Majid Yusuf Dar, has become the first Kashmiri who was chosen as one of the official as Intern by All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the high profile Nehru Cup-2009 that was held in the Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi.
While pursuing one year full time PG Diploma course at Naval Tata Institute of Sports Management, Kolkata, Majid was chosen as an official/Intern for the prestigious international cup.
In a freewheeling e-chat with RK, Majid dwells on this important assignment he embarked on successfully. Excerpts...
Q: This has been the first ever big assignment to any Kashmiri footballer?
A:The feelings are great to be the first Kashmiri who has been one of the officials deputed by AIFF for the tournament. It is always great to be part of such a prestigious cup. This is the only international event on the India soil. It has been a special job.

Q: How did you get the chance to be the part of the tournament?
A: I got the opportunity through sports management Institute in Kolkata where I am perusing P.G. course this time. The course is designed in such a way that one gets lot of practical exposure.
Q: What is the course all about?
A: This is a one-year full time PG course of N Tata Institute of Sports Management in Kolkata. This course is all about managing the event, managing players, teams, venues, associations, marketing of the events. It is a new course and many people don’t know about it.
Q: You’ve opted out-of-the box course. How did this bug occur to you?
A: I have been playing soccer for many years. I‘ve played for so many teams and have seen many qualified coaches. But I haven’t seen even a single qualified professional manager throughout my life when a he is very important for any sports organization. The manager has to be more qualified than anyone else in the team or association. This urged me to opt for this course.
Q: What tasks were you given during the Cup?
I was assigned with the official countdown, where you have to make teams ready in time before the match, like dressing, prayers, warm-up, and lineup of the teams…... then after the match would start I was to accompany media persons and provide them technical information of the match like card showing, scorers, changing, etc.
Q: It is your first experience on a big event. You must have been under lot of pressure?
A: Yes, obviously there was lot of pressure. But I am myself a footballer and I really enjoyed the job.
Q: How will you rate your performance?
A: I almost delivered to the best of my capabilities and the officials were highly impressed.
Q: One your friends was also part of the Indian football team.
A: Yeah, absolutely! I mean everyone in our State is proud of Wadoo. He is a great player and has been the regular player of national team which makes him more special. It was great to see him playing at a stones throw away with Indian side.
Q: Wadoo missed the chance to emerge the hero in the final match. It would have been nail-biting moment for you?
A: It was nail-biting. He missed a penalty kick. But the end result matters. India won...!
Mehraj is a great player and the only thing is that he has to remain focused.

Q: Are you looking forward for any other assignment?
A: Yes in event management, we’ve one more internship with the World Archery Youth Championship in Kolkata this month and then we’ve Hockey World Cup qualifying events in December. In team management we have to work with leading football teams of India like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mahindra United as a management trainee. In the end we’ve the academy internship with TFA Jamshedpur.
Q: After coming back to home, will you want any improvement in JK sports?
A: Definitely! If I would get a chance, I would work for the development of not only football but also for other games as well.
Q: Your organization (JK Bank) gave you the chance to do the course?
A: Yes, I want to thank the management of my organization. They reposed trust in me and allowed me to do this course.
