The JK Bank member, Majid Yusuf Dar, has become the first Kashmiri who was chosen as one of the official as Intern by All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the high profile Nehru Cup-2009 that was held in the Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi.
While pursuing one year full time PG Diploma course at Naval Tata Institute of Sports Management, Kolkata, Majid was chosen as an official/Intern for the prestigious international cup.
In a freewheeling e-chat with RK, Majid dwells on this important assignment he embarked on successfully. Excerpts...
Q: This has been the first ever big assignment to any Kashmiri footballer?
A:The feelings are great to be the first Kashmiri who has been one of the officials deputed by AIFF for the tournament. It is always great to be part of such a prestigious cup. This is the only international event on the India soil. It has been a special job.

Q: How did you get the chance to be the part of the tournament?
A: I got the opportunity through sports management Institute in Kolkata where I am perusing P.G. course this time. The course is designed in such a way that one gets lot of practical exposure.
Q: What is the course all about?
A: This is a one-year full time PG course of N Tata Institute of Sports Management in Kolkata. This course is all about managing the event, managing players, teams, venues, associations, marketing of the events. It is a new course and many people don’t know about it.
Q: You’ve opted out-of-the box course. How did this bug occur to you?
A: I have been playing soccer for many years. I‘ve played for so many teams and have seen many qualified coaches. But I haven’t seen even a single qualified professional manager throughout my life when a he is very important for any sports organization. The manager has to be more qualified than anyone else in the team or association. This urged me to opt for this course.
Q: What tasks were you given during the Cup?
I was assigned with the official countdown, where you have to make teams ready in time before the match, like dressing, prayers, warm-up, and lineup of the teams…... then after the match would start I was to accompany media persons and provide them technical information of the match like card showing, scorers, changing, etc.
Q: It is your first experience on a big event. You must have been under lot of pressure?
A: Yes, obviously there was lot of pressure. But I am myself a footballer and I really enjoyed the job.
Q: How will you rate your performance?
A: I almost delivered to the best of my capabilities and the officials were highly impressed.
Q: One your friends was also part of the Indian football team.
A: Yeah, absolutely! I mean everyone in our State is proud of Wadoo. He is a great player and has been the regular player of national team which makes him more special. It was great to see him playing at a stones throw away with Indian side.
Q: Wadoo missed the chance to emerge the hero in the final match. It would have been nail-biting moment for you?
A: It was nail-biting. He missed a penalty kick. But the end result matters. India won...!
Mehraj is a great player and the only thing is that he has to remain focused.
Mehraj is a great player and the only thing is that he has to remain focused.
Q: Are you looking forward for any other assignment?
A: Yes in event management, we’ve one more internship with the World Archery Youth Championship in Kolkata this month and then we’ve Hockey World Cup qualifying events in December. In team management we have to work with leading football teams of India like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mahindra United as a management trainee. In the end we’ve the academy internship with TFA Jamshedpur.
Q: After coming back to home, will you want any improvement in JK sports?
A: Definitely! If I would get a chance, I would work for the development of not only football but also for other games as well.
Q: Your organization (JK Bank) gave you the chance to do the course?
A: Yes, I want to thank the management of my organization. They reposed trust in me and allowed me to do this course.

PROFILE BY ABID KHAN
Santosh Trophy is being held in the state from May 25. The host team has been shortlisted and the 30 shortlisted players are honing their skills in the field.Profile of each of the state strikers will be published in this column.
Majid Yousuf Dar (Age: 29)
Position: Wing Back, Midfield
Teams: YMC, Kashmir University, City Club, Iqbal Sports, JK Bank, J&K
Employer team: JK Bank
Santosh Trophy participation: Two (Tamilnadu and Kerala
Majid is a son of legendary footballer of the valley, Muhammad Yousuf Dar who is a FIFA accredited coach. Football runs in his blood as his family has history of more than 50-years in football. Born in the family, which always remains in touch with football, Majid got into limelight early in his career.
He was in class 3rd when he got his National Talent Contest (NCT) selection conducted by Sports Authority of India (SAI) in 1987. Till completing studies, he didn’t spend a single penny from his pocket for school fees and other things as he got sports scholarship. All that came under NCT scholarship. Through that scholarship, he also participated in different tour camps organized by SAI from time to time in which players like Baichung Bhutia also participated.
Majid also participated in Subroto Mukherhee Cup in 1994, which was held at Delhi. He was captain of Biscoe School team. In 1995, he played in national school games held at Delhi and in that edition he was again captain of J&K team. After school, Majid joined SP College and for three years under his captainship, SP College won back-to-back inter -college titles. He also captained Kashmir University team in inter-university tournament held at Punjab University Chandigarh.
He was awarded best footballer of year award by J&K Government. Majid has played in one under-21 national football championship, which was held at Kapurthala.
The first club that Majid joined was YMC and for two years he was captain of the team. It was during that period he was selected for Santosh Trophy team in 1999. It was dream come true for Majid as in JK team players like Zahoor Teli were playing and he was youngest member of team. The Santosh Trophy was held in Ooty Tamil Nadu. Returning from the tournament, Majid was straight selected for the JK Bank team and from that time he is regular member of team. Majid participated in second Santosh Trophy at Kerala. With JK Bank, Majid has played in Durand Cup, Federation Cup, LG Cup and B-Division National League. He is an integral part of JK Bank team.
Recently he was promoted to manager rank (associate executive) by his employer and Majid gives credit of that to football. Majid has also had brief stints with City Club and Iqbal Sports.
Experts say that Majid is a fighting player and can change course of game at any moment. On the field he does lot of hard work and he concentrates hard on fitness. Technically and tactically he is sound and has got the versatility to play both as midfielder and wing back. He has also got the surprise element of scoring goals, which at times proves decider.
Psychologically he is tough but during this tournament he should control his emotions as at times he gets more involved in match. For JK team Majid can turn out as player to watch in the upcoming Santosh Trophy.
Majid thinks that JK has a great chance to win Santosh Trophy and he himself is pretty determined to perform in the tournament.
“It is just a matter of planning as individual efforts doesn’t matter. If JK has to perform well, we have to play like team. We have great chance to win this edition of tournament and all are working hard in a team including coach and manager,” Majid said.
Reality Bites
February 2010 ::
Many firsts to credit for this would be Professional Sports Manager
He is on his way becoming ‘first ever’ qualified professional sports manager from Kashmir and the first and only Kashmiri inducted in list of officials deputed by umbrella body of football in the country, All India Football Federation, for prestigious Nehru Cup, the only international event on Indian Soil.
Majid Dar, currently pursing one-year full time post graduate diploma course at Naval Tata Institute of Sports Management, Kolkata the only institute in India dedicated to the cause of sports management shares some moments with REALITY bites.
This Jammu and Kashmir bank member has thrice been a feature of Santosh Trophy, the biggest football gala of India, including the one played on his native soil back in May 2007 and Durand Cup. The world seems to be endless for optimistic Majid as he lists among the players undergone C-License training camp of Asian Football Confederation in a bid to develop an understating which, he believes, could prove handy in smooth manager-coach relation for a prosperous and successful team.
He could also, in much probability become a national football coach as he is also contemplating for ‘valued’ high-level B-License course soon after he completes his post graduate diploma.
Fate has had much more in its offing for Majid. In 9th Asian games at Kolkata, he was entrusted with responsibility of managing entire event of World Archery Youth Championship and he is set to mark his slate with important assignments including event management in Hockey World Cup qualifying events in December, academy management with Tata Institute of Football Academy Jamshedpur and in team management he is going to work with leading football clubs of India like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mahindra United as a management trainee.
Why did he opt out-of-the box course and how did this bug occur to him? There is no denial in the fact that India, in general and valley, in particular lacks qualified professional managers. Even after years of playing, Majid “didn’t come across” any such person who contains all essential features to be an ideal sports manager.
“I haven’t seen even a single qualified professional manager throughout my life and this urged me to opt for the course”, says Majid. The course is all about managing the event, managing players, teams, venues, associations, marketing of events, points Majid. He added that the course is designed in such a way that one gets lot of practical exposure.
During his duty as AIFF official for Nehru Cup, he was assigned with official countdown where he had to make Indian team ready in time before the match, like dressing, prayers, warm-up and lineup of teams……then after the match would start he was to accompany media personals and provide them technical information of the match like card-showing, score, changing and likewise.
It was a proud moment for Majid to share time with members of senior Indian national team and he could see one of his friends and a regular feature of Indian team, Mehrajuddin Wadoo at a stone’s throw playing with Indian side. Like any other player, Majid too had an aspiration of reaching the same fame as Wadoo; however, he is quite bold to admit that “not everyone could become Mehraj”.
There has been ever increasing tendency among players to move out of state to hone their skills and develop their game. This trend motivated Majid to take up management course at Tate Institute of Sports Management - Kolkatta, which has already placed its products in international sports arena. “The institute started functioning in 2004 and since then has placed almost all of its wards in international events like prestigious Common Wealth games and Nehru Cup,” points Majid.
Majid is quite a techno-savvy person and he likes to keep himself updated about latest happenings in sports world, especially football. It was during internet surfing that he came across the institute. “The dearth of sports professionalism in valley was always in the back of my mind and I at once decided to go for the course when I got to lean about it through internet,” he says.
The institute is presently offering management skills in eight different games including, football, cricket, horseacing, motor sports, tennis, archery and basketball, adds Majid.
In a country like India where cricket is treated as the ultimate sporting entertainment, there remains less room for football and other games. Arguably, the biggest market for European football outside Europe is definitely India. Majid believes that such sports management courses would create a lot of jobs in the sports industry in times to come.
Growing up
He is a second generation footballer and has inherited skill from his father, Mohammad Yusuf Dar who holds the reputation of being first ever international footballer from Kashmir and also captaining the home side in first ever Santosh Trophy played in valley back in early seventies.
However, he did not let such things dance their way easily into his head, he pulled up his socks and went on to book a berth in top notch football club of valley - The Jammu and Kashmi bank Football Club, through his gripping performances before proving his metal in some of the oldest football clubs of valley with the likes of State Road Transport Corporation Football Club and Iqbal Sports Football Club.
Being born and brought up in a football-loving atmosphere, Majid attributes his success to his father who, he says, went all-out in supporting him and motivated him to carry on the legacy of family. “My interest in football grew up seeing my father playing and imparting training to players, some of whom gained huge fame”, says Majid.
He added that his father is his inspiration. “I am thankful to Almighty who has bestowed me with such parents.” Early in his career Majid had an opportunity of rubbing shoulders with today’s superstar Baichung Bhutia when he was one among the only two boys from Kashmir in 80-member batch who were offered scholarship from Sports Authority of India. The scholarship continued and so did his spirit and passion for the game backed by unconditional family support.
“I was the only boy in my category who, never had to face any family restrictions”, points Majid, adding even my father didn’t stop me from making an important visit to Delhi to play Subroto Cup ahead of my matriculation examination.
Majid actually started out as midfielder and with passage of time leapt to right wingback position which turned out to be a regular spot for rest of his playing career. It is not that life has offered only bed of roses to Majid. He too had a tough time at some point of his career when he wasn’t included in playing XI despite being a key component of state team for 2007 Santosh Trophy.
Whatever the reason, the fact is that it was a nerve breaking time for Majid as he had weaved dreams of living the moment of his father, who had been the captain of state team for the same trophy. It could have been a career threatening moment for him but somehow he managed to keep his cool and continued to strive with excellence.
The Sports Manager
He is on his way to become the ‘first ever’ qualified professional sports manager from Kashmir. Majid Dar is also the first Kashmiri to be inducted in the list of officials deputed by the All India Football Federation for the prestigious Nehru Cup. Adil Makhdoomi reports
As a member of the J and K football team, he was a regular feature in national tournaments like Santosh trophy and Durand cup, the biggest football events in the country. Majid excelled in the midfield and right wingback position.
Majid realised quite early in his life that the Valley lags behind in terms of exposure and professional training standards. He says, “An ever increasing tendency among the local players is to move out of the state to hone their skills and develop their game”. This trend motivated Majid to switch to sports training and management.
Today Majid is a successful sports manager. His skills have been appreciated throughout the country. He is among the select few players throughout the country to have undergone the C-license training camp of the Asian football academy. To further hone his skills he has taken up a sports management course at the Tate Institute of Sports Management, Kolkatta. After completing the course he has plans of going for the high-level B-Level course and becoming a national coach
Majid feels that there is a serious dearth of professional sports mangers in the state. “I haven’t seen even a single qualified professional manager throughout my playing life and this urged me to opt for the course”. The course is all about managing the event, managing players, teams, venues, associations, marketing of the events, points Majid, adding, the course is designed in such a way that one gets lot of practical exposure.
Majid's career took off when he was given the responsibility of managing the entire event of World Archery Youth Championship at the 9th Asian Games held at Kolkata. Now he has important assignments on his plate including event management in Hockey World Cup qualifying events, Academy management with Tata Institute of Football Academy Jamshedpur. In team management he is going to work with leading football clubs of India like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mahindra United as a management trainee.
